Why Should Eye Pressure Be Checked Regularly?

What is eye pressure?
Inside the eye there is a fluid that is constantly produced and drained. This balance creates the intraocular pressure. Pressure levels higher than the optic nerve can withstand have a harmful effect on the nerve.
Is a normal measurement enough?
A single normal eye pressure reading does not rule out glaucoma with certainty. In some people, glaucoma-related damage to the optic nerve can develop even when the pressure is within the normal range. For this reason, measuring eye pressure is only one part of a comprehensive eye examination.
Who should be more careful?
Regular follow-up is especially important for people with a family history of glaucoma, older people and patients whom a doctor has identified as being at risk.
How is follow-up carried out?
The frequency of checkups is not the same for everyone. Follow-up is planned individually according to the results of the intraocular pressure, optic nerve and other tests.
When is an eye examination needed?
If you have a vision complaint that is new, ongoing or affecting your daily life, it is advisable to have it evaluated with an eye examination. Symptoms such as sudden loss of vision, severe eye pain or a curtain/shadow in your visual field should be evaluated without delay.
