What Is a Smart Lens? Who Is It Suitable For?

What does “smart lens” mean?
The lenses popularly known as “smart lenses” are certain intraocular lenses designed to support vision at different distances. In medical terms, there may be multifocal or extended depth of focus lens options with different designs.
What are they used for?
The aim of these lenses is to reduce the need for glasses at distance, intermediate or near ranges in suitable patients. However, it cannot be guaranteed that no glasses at all will be needed after surgery.
Are they suitable for everyone?
No. The decision is made by evaluating the condition of the cornea, retina, macula and optic nerve, as well as eye pressure, the ocular surface and the patient's daily visual needs.
Can you stop wearing glasses completely with a smart lens?
Although the aim is to provide distance, intermediate and near vision entirely without glasses, glasses may still be needed for some fine detail. A completely glasses-free life cannot be guaranteed.
How is the lens chosen?
A lens that is very suitable for one patient may not be suitable for another. For this reason, lens selection should be based not on advertising or brand, but on a detailed eye examination and the patient's expectations.
When is an eye examination needed?
If you have a vision complaint that is new, ongoing or affecting your daily life, it is advisable to have it evaluated with an eye examination. Symptoms such as sudden loss of vision, severe eye pain or a curtain/shadow in your visual field should be evaluated without delay.
