Diabetic retinopathy and diabetes-related eye problems

Diabetes can cause changes in the retinal blood vessels such as leakage, edema, bleeding and the growth of new vessels. These changes may not cause symptoms at first; seeing well does not, on its own, mean that the retina is unaffected.

The condition of the eye is assessed with a dilated fundus examination, retinal imaging and, when needed, tests such as OCT. The follow-up interval is set according to the findings; when necessary, laser, intraocular injection or surgical options may be planned. Controlling blood sugar, blood pressure and other systemic risks is also important for protecting eye health.
