Can laser be performed on everyone?

No. For laser surgery, in addition to the eye's prescription, the topographic structure of the cornea, its thickness, the ocular surface and the general health of the eye must be evaluated. The patient's age matters. It is generally performed from the age of 18-20. After the age of 40, each patient must be assessed individually. The glasses prescription must have stopped changing and must not be progressing.

What is checked during the examination?

Corneal mapping and thickness measurements may be performed; the status of the eye's prescription, dry eye and other eye structures such as the retina are evaluated.

Why is a detailed evaluation needed?

The aim is not only to reduce the eye's prescription, but to do so while safeguarding the long-term health of the eye. The cornea, retina and all structures of the eye should be examined and evaluated thoroughly. For an eye that is not suitable, options other than laser may be considered.

Who is laser not performed on?

Refractive laser treatment is not performed on people whose glasses prescription is progressing, whose corneal structure is not suitable, or who have certain systemic diseases or eye conditions.

Can the result be guaranteed?

No specific visual outcome can be guaranteed for any surgical procedure. Expectations should be discussed realistically before surgery.

When is an eye examination needed?

If you have a vision complaint that is new, ongoing or affecting your daily life, it is advisable to have it evaluated with an eye examination. Symptoms such as sudden loss of vision, severe eye pain or a curtain/shadow in your visual field should be evaluated without delay.

Information note: This article has been prepared for general information purposes. Decisions on diagnosis and treatment should be made after evaluating the person's eye examination and medical condition.
