What Is a Retinal Tear? What Are the Symptoms?

What is the retina?
The retina is the nerve layer at the back of the eye that senses light and plays a key role in forming the image.
How does the retina tear?
As the gel inside the eye separates from the retina, traction can develop in some areas and the retina can tear.
What are the symptoms?
Sudden flashes of light, new and dense floaters, a curtain/shadow in the field of vision, and reduced vision are important symptoms.
How is it treated?
Depending on the location and characteristics of the tear, methods such as laser may be used. If a retinal detachment has developed, surgery may be needed. For this reason, early evaluation is important.
When is an eye examination needed?
If you have a vision complaint that is new, ongoing or affecting your daily life, it is advisable to have it evaluated with an eye examination. Symptoms such as sudden loss of vision, severe eye pain or a curtain/shadow in your visual field should be evaluated without delay.
